Using your preferred first name or chosen name at Université Grenoble Alpes
Would you like to be referred to by your first name or the name you commonly use at the “Université Grenoble Alpes ” (UGA), even if your civil status change has not yet been finalized? It’s possible. We’ve established procedures that allow you to change your first name, last name, or gender on many documents.
Changing the name you go by
Changes to Academic Documents
Here are the documents that can be edited:
The student ID card.
Class rosters, attendance lists, and sign-in sheets.
Minutes of the deliberations.
Displaying test results.
Grade reports.
Lists of election candidates.
However, for technical and legal reasons, official documents such as The enrollment certificate, certificate of completion, and diploma can only be issued with the first name listed on your civil registry record.
Fill out and sign the form. If you are a minor, the form must be signed by your legal guardian.
Submit the form to the registrar's office at your school, college, or institute.
Changing Your University Digital Credentials
For technical reasons, Your UGA digital ID cannot be changed.
However, you can request a Changing Your First Name in Your University Email Account (in the format prenom.nom@univ-grenoble-alpes.fr). You must submit this request directly to the "SOS étudiants" service at the following address:
If you are of legal age, you may add the last name of your other parent to your own last name, even if it does not appear on your civil status records. If you are a minor, this change is only possible with the written consent of your legal guardian.
Please note that this procedure applies only to common names used to indicate kinship. A spouse's last name cannot be used as the primary last name at the university.
Changes to Academic Documents
Unlike a common first name, a common last name may appear on official documents issued by the university:
The diploma.
Certificate of Completion.
The Enrollment Certificate.
Class rosters, attendance lists, and sign-in sheets.
However, your birth name will still appear on:
The student ID card.
Grade reports.
Minutes of the deliberations.
Displaying test results.
Lists of election candidates.
How do I apply?
To complete this process, you must contact your registrar's office and provide the following documents:
A copy of your civil status record.
A copy of your family register.
A form of identification (ID card or passport) that shows the name you go by.
