Courses offered to learn a foreign language or improve your skills

Whether you want to improve your language skills for your studies, your future career, or a stay abroad, we're here to help. Here are the different types of courses we offer.

Required language courses

Most of the programs offered at Université Grenoble Alpes include a required language course.

If you have a required course in your bachelor's or master's program, it will be an elective course, meaning that you will study the language that is appropriate for the specific focus of your program.

In that case, You don't need to register. Your academic advisor will inform you of the placement procedures.

Elective Language Courses

If you wish, you also have the option of learning one or more other languages from among the 20 languages offered by the Language Services Department as part of the Elective Interdisciplinary Courses (ETC).

ETCs are multidisciplinary elective courses open to all students at Université Grenoble Alpes. They comprise 24 hours of instruction over one semester.

There are several types of elective language courses:

  • Beginner Courses These courses allow you to discover a language you have never studied before.
  • Language of Communication
    These courses, organized by level, help you communicate more effectively in writing and speaking in everyday situations.
  • Thematic Courses
    These courses are available in German, English, Arabic, Chinese, Italian, and many other languages. The topics covered are varied: society, professional communication, artistic expression... Please note: a minimum A2 level is recommended for most of these courses.
  • International Mobility Preparation Courses
    Are you planning an exchange, an internship, or a trip abroad? These courses will help you prepare for the situations you’ll encounter while you’re there.

Open Language Classes

We offer courses to help you learn or improve your skills in 19 different languages.

These courses are open to everyone, whether you're a student or not.
  • How can I take these courses?
    You can enroll in these courses as part of your university program or on your own, for fun or to advance your career. You also have the option to continue your learning across multiple levels so you can progress at your own pace.
  • Flexible Courses
    In addition to traditional in-person courses, we offer other options. For example, you can choose to learn languages “à la carte” for greater flexibility, either as a supplement to or outside of your main program of study.
