Metrics for Sustainable Digital Development

The growth of digital technology is profoundly transforming our societies and is accompanied by significant environmental and social impacts. In light of planetary boundaries, it is now essential to develop more resource-efficient technologies, optimize infrastructure, and rethink how we use technology. This program prepares future professionals to integrate ethical, human, and ecological considerations into the development of digital technology.

This program is designed for those who wish to understand the interplay of technical, human, and environmental issues in the digital world and take concrete action to promote sustainable technology.

Although it is often described as intangible, digital technology relies on physical infrastructure and equipment : devices, networks, data centers, electronic components, and software. Their manufacture, use, and end-of-life consume resources, energy, and water, while generating waste and impacting ecosystems. Today, increased usage and the development of artificial intelligence are exacerbating these pressures on ecosystems.

Making digital technology more sustainable requires taking action across its entire life cycle and addressing the governance frameworks that govern it:
  • Eco-design
Reduce the resources required to run software and services.
  • Impact Analysis
Measuring consumption, conducting life cycle assessments (LCA), and identifying rebound effects.
  • The Circular Economy
Extending the lifespan of equipment through repair and reuse.
  • Responsible Use and Governance
Take into account users’ actual needs, inclusion, data protection, security, and digital sovereignty.
Beyond the ecological footprint, Sustainability prompts us to question how technology is transforming our societies : digital access, cybersecurity, combating misinformation, and technology addiction. This involves adopting a systemic approach in which technology is inseparable from its human and social consequences.

A wide range of professions and skills

This field offers a wide range of career opportunities. Developers, systems engineers, network specialists, designers, and consultants can work at various levels—from the technical optimization of services to the fundamental transformation of organizations.

Sustainable digital technology requires professionals who are capable of addressing complex problems with both a technical and a holistic perspective, while systematically incorporating ethical and social considerations into their work.

To train these experts, our curriculum combines technical knowledge (mathematics, computer science) with insights from the social sciences.
