The Thesis: Experiencing Research

Pursuing a PhD means managing an original research project, from conception to defense. You will join an outstanding scientific community rich in collaborations between cutting-edge laboratories and major international facilities. Joining Université Grenoble Alpes means thriving within France's most dynamic innovation ecosystem.

Doctors' Skills: A Career Asset

Beyond scientific expertise, this research-based training helps develop intellectual rigor, critical thinking skills, and the independence that is invaluable for any high-level career. A doctoral graduate also possesses many other soft skills that make a difference, particularly in the corporate world.

The college and the 13 doctoral schools

At Université Grenoble Alpes, both doctoral candidates and supervisors are affiliated with one of our 13 disciplinary doctoral schools. These schools are the primary points of contact for doctoral candidates, supporting them throughout their journey from application to defense. The doctoral college coordinates these 13 schools and offers cross-cutting services (training, careers, international support, social services, etc.).

Writing a Thesis While Working at a Company

You can combine the excellence of an academic laboratory with the real-world experience of a company, local government, or nonprofit organization—in particular through the CIFRE program (Industrial Agreement for Training through Research). This type of contract provides you with dual expertise that enhances your employability and addresses concrete challenges.

An International Outlook

A Ph.D. program is international by nature: more than 60% of our publications result from collaborations with international laboratories. Through study abroad programs and joint thesis projects (co-supervised theses), you will conduct your research in a multicultural environment and build an international scientific network.

Topics and Funding

A doctoral program rests on three pillars: the dissertation topic, the doctoral student, and the advisor. You can propose your own research project or join a project already defined by your dissertation advisor. In the vast majority of cases, various research support programs provide funding for your work as a doctoral student, across all fields (science, humanities, law, etc.).

The Doctoral Center

The Jean Kuntzmann Doctoral Center is a space dedicated to doctoral students. It brings together all the necessary services in one place to provide you with personalized support throughout your dissertation. It is also a welcoming place to connect with your peers and enjoy a variety of events throughout the year.
