Careers in the Space Industry: Skills That Address the Major Challenges Facing Our Society

Space technologies, which are essential for many everyday applications, are at the heart of major scientific, environmental, and technological challenges. Driven by the New Space movement, the industry is rapidly evolving, giving rise to new applications and a wide range of skill requirements. Discover our training programs to prepare for careers in the space industry and contribute to the innovations of tomorrow!

This program is designed for those who wish to contribute to our understanding of the universe while addressing the major challenges facing our planet. It draws on expertise in science, electronics, mechanics, engineering, computer science, and data analysis to design new space systems.

Making phone calls, determining one’s location, checking the weather, monitoring climate change, or anticipating certain natural hazards: space technologies are now at the heart of many services and applications. Satellites and space data are also used in fields as diverse as telecommunications, transportation, agriculture, the environment, and risk management.

With the rise of the New Space, the space sector is evolving rapidly. The miniaturization of satellites (nanosatellites), satellite constellations, new uses for space data, and the emergence of new players—these changes are paving the way not only for new technologies but also for new careers.

The industry thus draws on a wide range of skills in physics, mechanics, electronics, computer science, mathematics, materials science, telecommunications, artificial intelligence, and data processing. From design to manufacturing, testing, and the operation of space systems, it offers a wide variety of careers and seeks candidates with a diverse range of backgrounds and qualification levels.

At Université Grenoble Alpes, our programs prepare students for careers in the space sector across various fields—from electronics and embedded systems to instrumentation and data processing—contributing to the design and operation of space technologies.

Training for a career in the space industry means being part of the major scientific and technological innovations of tomorrow!

3 examples of careers we prepare you for:

  • Space Systems Engineer
Design and coordinate all the systems for a satellite or space mission. You will oversee the integration of the various subsystems (power, communications, instrumentation, software) and ensure their proper operation in extreme environments.
  • Assembly, Integration, and Testing (AIT) Technician
Help build and verify space equipment. You will assemble satellites, perform functional and environmental tests, and ensure their compliance before they are launched into orbit.
  • Space Computer Engineer
Develop embedded software and data processing systems for space applications. You will contribute to the use of satellite data and the implementation of digital solutions for space missions and terrestrial applications.
