Becoming a Language Assistant or Lecturer

Would you like to travel while teaching your native language? The language assistant program allows you to immerse yourself in a new culture, improve your language skills, and discover the teaching profession.

What does this program entail?

The program is managed by France International Education, an organization that operates internationally on behalf of the French Ministry of National Education.

As a language assistant, You will work alongside local teachers to teach French. You will help students practice the language and learn about French culture.

The duration of the assignment, working hours, salary, and health insurance coverage vary by country. Before making a decision, it is important to thoroughly research the working conditions in the countries that interest you.

What are the requirements for applying?

As a student at Université Grenoble Alpes, you can apply to countries that have expressed a need matching your field of study, provided you meet the criteria below:
  • You must be a student in the year you apply. Exceptions may be made for applicants who already have experience as a language assistant and are applying for one of the following countries: Germany, Austria, Spain, Mexico, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Switzerland.
  • Be a French citizen or a citizen of a European Union member state (depending on the destination).
  • You must have completed high school in France or at a French school abroad.
  • Be between 20 and 30 years old. The age limit may be extended to 35 in certain countries: Austria, Colombia, Costa Rica, Spain, Mexico, the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland.
  • At the time of your application, you must be enrolled in the first, second, or third year of a bachelor’s degree program (L1, L2, or L3).
  • Have a good command of the host country's language, that is, at least a B1 level on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (except for China and the Netherlands).
