The University Training and Coaching Center (CUFE) and Pôle France Judo

The University Training and Coaching Center (CUFE) for Judo is one of the seven CUFEs under the “Université Grenoble Alpes.” This specialized support program is based on a unique partnership between the university and the sports community and provides eligible high-level student-athletes with optimal training and recovery conditions close to their place of study. Through the nationally recognized CUFE Judo, Grenoble joined the network of the French Judo Federation’s seven “Pôles France” in 2023.

In order to balance high-level sports with higher education, high-level student-athletes (SHN) from the CUFE and the Pôle France Judo athletes benefit from an exceptional support system.

Tailored educational support

Theeducational support The SHN student program is offered in all academic programs at the University of Grenoble-Alpes (Université Grenoble Alpes , UGA) and its three constituent institutions: Grenoble INP - UGA, Sciences Po Grenoble - UGA, and the École nationale supérieure d’architecture de Grenoble - UGA. This allows athletes to choose their program of study based on their interests and career goals, rather than by default based on the programs that happen to be available.

The academic support program is structured around the athletes’ athletic commitments. It is also personalized: each SHN student is supported by an SHN advisor and a faculty coordinator in their field of study. They may also receive assistance from an academic advisor who specializes in supporting SHN students and a social support privileged.

Optimized training conditions

The CUFEs are the result of a partnership between the federal sports community and the academic community. They are based on the pooling of resources: the university provides sports facilities, while the sports community (federations, leagues, committees, and clubs) provides technical staff and coaches. This partnership enables every SHN student to benefit from highly qualified coaching, high-quality sports facilities, and a close geographical proximity between their place of study and their training locations (dojo and weight room on campus). This proximity minimizes time lost to commuting and promotes success in both academic and athletic pursuits.

CUFE members can also benefit from a scientific approach to training: learning mental skills, isokinetic testing, energy system power testing, and more…

Enhanced medical and paramedical care

SHN students at the CUFE have access to a comprehensive and enhanced sports medicine program, ranging from treatment for injuries to initiatives designed to create the conditions for athletic performance. They can undergo a thorough medical examination, followed by ongoing monitoring, and are guaranteed a medical consultation within 24 hours. They also have access to a physical therapy clinic for emergency care, recovery treatments (cold water baths, saunas, drainage boots), or rehabilitation, for a total of 15 hours per week.

Join the CUFE and Pôle France Judo

In September 2023, Grenoble, through the CUFE Judo, joined the network of the seven Pôles France judo centers, which "help prepare judokas to compete at the international level in the cadet, junior, and young senior divisions". This recognition of the excellence of the support program by the French Judo Federation (France Judo) thus offers students the opportunity to join the Pôle France in Grenoble, the only such center in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.

CUFE Judo and Pôle France Judo are the result of a pooling of resources between the UGA, France Judo, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Judo League and the National Sports Agency (ANS). Its purpose is to welcome elite athletes (as designated by the Ministry of Sports), as well as athletes with potential (at the national level in the junior or senior first division of the French Judo Federation). These judokas, who remain members of their federation clubs, are then granted the status of elite student-athletes.

An SHN student majoring in economics and business administration, the 2019 and 2020 African judo champion, and third-place finisher at the 2022 Portugal Grand Prix, Mbagnick Ndiaye competed for Senegal at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics. Ahead of that major event, he reflected on his Olympic training with the CUFE Judo team.
On the campus tatami mats, CUFE Judo offers daily and twice-daily sessions focused on judo and physical conditioning, led by instructors who are recognized experts in their fields. Training camps and preparatory tournaments are also organized in anticipation of the upcoming sporting events.

"For a very long time, judo has developed in tandem with and in a complementary manner alongside the sports program and the Grenoble Alpes University system. This experience, spanning more than 40 years, now allows high-level student judokas to benefit from the genuine expertise of various university and athletic advisors. As a result, judokas can continue their athletic training while best balancing it with their academic studies."

"The excellence of the University of Grenoble-Alpes’ (UGA) support system for high-level student athletes—particularly judokas—played a significant role in France Judo’s decision to establish a new Pôle France in Grenoble in September 2023. This unique collaborative program—covering athletic, academic, social, medical, and paramedical aspects—enables students to pursue a true dual path of excellence: both in sports and in academics."

"Toward the end of my high school years at the Pôle Espoir in Grenoble, it was important to me to be able to continue pursuing my dual goals. Enrolling at UGA and the CUFE Judo program allowed me to continue my studies while also pursuing my athletic career. Thanks to my SHN status and the accommodations put in place, I was able to take time off for training camps and competitions while still making up my exams. The CUFE gives us access to a weight room and medical care, which is very beneficial. Thanks to a sports scholarship, I’ve also received tremendous support from the UGA Foundation. I’m very grateful for everything this program has given me over the past four years.”
