OGRE - Optimization in Grenoble

Mathematics Applied to the Field of Optimization
The OGRE thematic program is aligned with master’s-level programs and aims to provide outstanding students pursuing careers in research with a high-level education that includes a research project spanning both years of the master’s program and typically leads to a Ph.D.

This program is based on international master’s programs (MSIAM, CySec, ORCO) that cover all areas of digital technology, supplemented by a two-year research project during which students are closely supervised by a research advisor or faculty researcher. The program will incorporate the AI (Artificial Intelligence) track and then the AI specialization in the next accreditation cycle, featuring its M2 AI degree in 2027, beginning with the launch of the M1 AI program at the start of the 2026 academic year. This research project accounts for 12 ECTS credits over the two years of the master’s program.

The appeal of the OGRE thematic program will rest on the theme of optimization, which has a broad range of applications and thus lies at the intersection of several disciplines. For this reason, the optimization courses we will offer will lead, through projects in the M1 and M2 years, to large-scale applications in other disciplines.

OGRE Program Activities

OGRE Seminars

Six seminars per year, held on Thursday afternoons, featuring researchers—primarily from applied fields—who will present their perspectives on the use of optimization in their respective fields. The primary goal of these seminars will be to foster interdisciplinary exchange. Seminars in applied mathematics focusing on optimization methods may also be offered.

OGREhack Summer School and Hackathon

It will take place at the end of the year after the M1 and M2 exams and will be open to all M1 and M2 students who wish to participate. It could be combined with the OGRE summer school, which would potentially attract a wider audience.

The course units in the OGRE program

The OGRE thematic program focuses on the topic of optimization. To this end, students in the thematic program are required to take two courses:

  • M1 - Numerical Optimization and the OGRE Project (6 ECTS)
33 hours of lectures and 33 hours of lab work, along with a supervised project, which will be based on a theoretical component already included in the M1 Applied Mathematics program (“Numerical Optimization”) combined with a project supervised by a faculty member on a multidisciplinary topic.
  • M2 - Mathematical Optimization and the OGRE Project (6 ECTS)
36 hours of lectures and 18 hours of lab work, along with a project that will build upon an existing theoretical component in the M2 MSIAM program (“Mathematical Optimization”) and include a supervised project designed to help students transition into the field of research.
